Girls on the Run: Helping build self-confidence
Help promote wellness in girls aged 8-13
Girls on the Run is a national organization whose goal is to inspire self-confidence and a healthy lifestyle in girls between the ages of 8 and 13 through participation in running programs. The groups also discuss issues related to all areas of wellness, with the hope that this will help build a lasting self-confidence.
Volunteers for Girls on the Run help in several different areas. The coaching position requires more of a time commitment, but is great for individuals who are looking to have a more in-depth involvement. Girls on the Run also has volunteers called "running buddies," who may not have the time commitment to be a coach but are still interested in helping out. Running buddies run with the girls on a race day and offer them support and encouragement along the way.

Library Printing, iMacs Unavailable Thursday, October 4
New printers being installed
Printing in the Library will be unavailable on Thursday, October 4 as we install new printers on the first floor. These new printers will handle both color AND black-and-white printing. The printers will also be configured to allow copying, and scanning to a flash drive.
Current UMBC students, faculty, and staff will still be able to print from the Retriever Learning Center on Thursday.
In addition, the iMacs will be offline as they are networked to the new printers.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

CSEE professor Tinoosh Mohsenin to speak at Grace Hopper conference, 10/3
Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 3rd, Dr. Tinoosh Mohsenin will speak at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. She will talk about a "A Many-core Platform for Intelligent Biomedical Systems". Her presentation will be on "Data Intensive Computing" in the New Investigators session starting at 10:45 am. Abstract
This talk presents a low power programmable many-core platform well suited for portable biomedical and DSP applications and contains 64 cores routed in a hierarchical network. For demonstration, Electroencephalogram (EEG) seizure detection and analysis and ultrasound spectral doppler are mapped onto the cores. The seizure detection and analysis algorithm takes 900 ns and consumes 240 nJ of energy. Spectral doppler takes 715 ns and consumes 182 nJ of energy. The prototype is implemented in 65 nm CMOS which contains 64 cores, occupies 19.51 mm2 and runs at 1.18 GHz at 1 V.
Speaker’s bio
Dr. Tinoosh Mohsenin is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County since 2011. Prior to joining UMBC, she was finishing her PhD at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Mohsenin’s research interests lie in the areas of high performance and energy-efficiency in programmable and special purpose processors. She is the director of Energy Efficient High Performance Computing (EEPC) Lab where she leads projects in architecture, hardware, software tools, and applications for VLSI computation with an emphasis on digital signal processing workloads. She has been consultant to early stage technology companies and currently serves inTechnical Program Committees of the IEEE Biomedical Circuits & Systems Conference (BioCAS), Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop (LiSSA), International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED) and IEEE Women in Circuits and Systems (WiCAS).

Excerpt: The Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in eukaryotic cell biology, especially as it relates to neurobiology, to complement existing departmental strengths in neuroscience and cell and developmental biology, and to interact with faculty whose interests range from genomics and molecular genetics to ecology, evolution, and behavior. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field of biological sciences, post-doctoral experience and a strong publication record and is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program, supervise doctoral-level graduate students, and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, summary of current research and future plans, and a statement of teaching interests and philosophy to biosearch@umbc.edu in a single PDF in the above order. Cell Biology Faculty Position Available at UMBC! Postdocs available in all fields! Faculty positions at other schools
On behalf of UMBC, PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP is pleased to announce the following job openings:
Excerpt: The Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in eukaryotic cell biology, especially as it relates to neurobiology, to complement existing departmental strengths in neuroscience and cell and developmental biology, and to interact with faculty whose interests range from genomics and molecular genetics to ecology, evolution, and behavior. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field of biological sciences, post-doctoral experience and a strong publication record and is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program, supervise doctoral-level graduate students, and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, summary of current research and future plans, and a statement of teaching interests and philosophy to biosearch@umbc.edu in a single PDF in the above order. The applicant should also arrange to have three letters of reference in PDF format, sent to biosearch@umbc.edu.
