Established in 2020 to commemorate the commencement of the Class of 1970, the first class to graduate from UMBC, this fund provides scholarship support for degree-seeking students participating in approved study abroad programs. DUO Multi-Factor Authentication Outage
We are aware of an issue affecting DUO Multi-Factor Authentication for some users. While certain authentication methods may still be working, others are experiencing intermittent or complete outages.
The DUO Service Provider is restoring service to full functionality as quickly as possible.

Workarounds:
If you are able to log in using the DUO Mobile app (push notification), a remembered device, or a hardware token, please do so. DoIT encourages users to install the DUO application if they have not already done so.

Artificial Intelligence has become deeply integrated into diverse systems, transforming industries and reshaping our daily lives. However, this widespread adoption also introduces critical privacy risks across the training data, AI models, and AI-powered systems. This talk will explore privacy challenges through these three aspects. First, I will introduce the first high-fidelity attack that exposes the privacy vulnerabilities of training data in pre-trained models and commercial AI services. Next, I will present a novel physical impersonating attack that highlights the privacy risks inherent in AI-based authentication systems. Additionally, I will discuss the first data-free framework designed to eliminate trigger-based model watermarks in diffusion models that aim to protect their intellectual property. Finally, I will conclude with a forward-looking perspective on addressing privacy risks in emerging generative AI techniques, such as Large Language Models and Stable Diffusion Models.
Shengwei An is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University, advised by Prof. Xiangyu Zhang. His research focuses on AI security and privacy, with an emphasis on designing state-of-the-art tools to investigate and mitigate privacy vulnerabilities in real-world AI systems. His work has been published in top-tier conferences, including S&P, USENIX Security, NDSS, and AAAI. He is the recipient of the Ross Fellowship from Purdue University and the Best Paper Award in the ECCV 2022 AROW Workshop.

TAILORABILITY OF CERAMIC COMPOSITES THROUGH ADVANCED MANUFACTURING SCIENCE AND DESIGN

Dr. Lionel Vargas-Gonzalez, chief of the Ceramics and Transparent Materials Branch of the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, will be visiting on Friday, Feb. 14. Please see abstract and biography below.
Abstract:
Tunability and tailorability of ceramic microstructure is not a new nor unique concept. Many researchers have provided the rationale for the development of graded and tailored ceramic structures and interfaces as a means for unlocking unique and non-intrinsic mechanical and thermal response; the body of literature in this area is vast. Yet, the primary challenge yet to be overcome is the manufacturing science to enable the development of these cohesive, defect free, tailorable materials designs. In this work, we highlight the efforts to (1) develop processing tools and capabilities to generate spatially-tailored bulk structural ceramics and interfaces, including the design and implementation of advanced manufacturing tools and adaptations of additive manufacturing approaches, (2) create design optimization tools to generate insight toward reducing defects and stresses during manufacturing and densification, and (3) demonstrate ability for tailoring of bulk ceramic specimens with discussion on current challenges that persist with current approaches.
Bio:
Lionel Vargas-Gonzalez is a materials engineer for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory, currently serving as Chief (A) of the Ceramics and Transparent Materials Branch. His research efforts have focused on the discovery, development and transition of materials and manufacturing sciences towards dismounted Soldier protection technologies. He received a BS degree in Ceramic and Materials Engineering in 2004 from Clemson University and a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering in 2009 from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Collis-Donadio's “Conflux: Variation” Begins Tomorrow, Feb. 14, 2025
CADVC Presents Public Art Projection & Upcoming Talk
CADVC will host a public talk featuring Shannon Collis and Liz Donadio of Baltimore-region artist collective, Collis Donadio, on March 4 at 6 pm. Their work, “Conflux: Variation” will be on view nightly from sundown until 2 am between February 14 and June 30, 2025 at the Fine Arts Building at UMBC.
“Conflux: Variation” (2025) is a public video art projection that explores the intersections of industry and the environment in Baltimore, where water meets land.
Between 2023 and 2024, collaborating artists Shannon Collis and Liz Donadio recorded video and audio documentation in sites where industry has reshaped local habitats, such as the Curtis Bay Water Tower and Baltimore City’s marine terminals. The artists think of this documentary research and resulting installation as a “speculative exploration of the future, using moving images to convey transformation and transition.”
