2025 UMBC Suits You: Professional Clothing Drive Help Students Suit Up for Success: Donate!

The Career Center is collecting new and gently used professional clothing for "UMBC Suits You" as part of Career Month.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about dressing professionally and then be able to select one free outfit to use for job interviews, career fairs, networking opportunities and much more.. We are asking staff, faculty, alumni, and affiliates to donate new and gently used professional attire at collection bins around campus from February 17th - February 28th.

Starting February 17th, professional clothing can be dropped off at the following on-campus locations:

Items that will be accepted: Pant suits, skirt suits, dress pants, dresses, skirts, blazers, shell tops, button-up shirts, blouses, ties, and dress belts.

Items that will NOT be accepted: Jewelry, handbags, shoes, and general accessories.

All items should be in good condition, and appropriate for interaction with potential employers and professional contacts. Please be selective! Clothing that is in poor condition, stained, or out of style won’t help our students make a good first impression. All clothing will be professionally cleaned before being offered to students.

Clothing donations will be used to benefit UMBC students and will not be considered gifts-in-kind or donations to UMBC. Clothing donations are not tax deductible. Any leftover clothing will be donated to local nonprofits.

We covered topics like:
  • How to read a textbook chapter efficiently
  • What you need to write down during your reading/module/lecture video
  • How to take notes that function as a study tool (hint: you should be creating flashcards!)
  • What you should be focused on writing down during class
  • What to do after class to make sure that you tie up all the loose ends!
  • Special attention given to BIOL141 and CHEM102, since those are our biggest life science classes this semester!

This hybrid event includes a line-up of speakers and panelists who will share their personal career journeys and highlight the ways the heritage jobs have been expanding in the 21st century. This includes a Keynote from Dr. Cheryl LaRoche. Topics will include archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, extended reality, computer animation, 3-D digital documentation, and more! After the speakers, in-person attendees will be able to visit with businesses and academic programs to learn more about education and career opportunities.

The event is focused on students from high school through graduate school. The event is Saturday, February 22, 2025; 9am-4pm, University of Maryland, College Park
School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

The Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP2) is a multi-angle imaging polarimeter instrument, which was built, calibrated, and currently is supported by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers at UMBC’s Earth and Space Institute (ESI). HARP2 was launched to space on-board the NASA Plankton Aerosol Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission on February 8, 2024. The instrument was turned on over the next few days, and on February 19, 2024, ESI engineers began commissioning activities at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to assess instrument health and validate its science operations.

On April 11, 2024, for the first time, the world saw what HARP2 sees from space: beautiful rainbows atop liquid water clouds, a hazy, blue atmosphere observed from oblique angles, aerosol plumes floating broadly over a dark ocean, and most importantly, wide swath imagery of the Earth, every two days. To date, HARP2 has imaged the entire Earth over 180 times and with special polarized eyes that reveal an almost alien world (see image below). Sensitivity to polarization allows scientists to discriminate different kinds, sizes, and shapes of aerosols (such as dust and smoke), separate liquid water droplets from ice crystals, and distinguish light scattering from molecules from information coming from the ocean. These measurements will help the climate community answer pressing science questions that could only be addressed with global data from a HARP-like instrument.

HARP2 is an exciting leap in space technology and science capability for UMBC. The climate community is starting to use HARP2 data to benefit society and policy, to reduce our uncertainties in climate prediction, to study land use change, the interaction between aerosol particles and clouds, and the composition of phytoplankton in the ocean, and learning how to efficiently process the gigabytes and gigabytes of HARP2 data streaming down from PACE daily. Much of this work is led by scientists at the ESI along with our partners in GESTAR II and NASA GSFC.
