SPRING 2025 STUDY HALL IS OPEN – Monday through Friday 1-4PM!! Start the semester with good, healthy habits in the TLC!

A new semester means a clean slate and plenty of opportunities to start off with good, healthy habits like regular study sessions or study groups! To help you meet these goals, CNMS is opening up The Learning Collaboratory (UC 115) for an open study hall EVERY WEEKDAY (Monday - Friday) 1-4 PM. During these open study hours, you will have access to a monitored, distraction-free environment where you can study independently or as a group in a quiet, conducive learning space. If you have been looking for a great place to study on campus – THIS IS IT! We are located right behind Starbucks and Chick-fil-A so you can easily drop in after your mid-day pick me up! 


This space is open to all students but throughout the semester we will also be providing introductory-level biology (141/142), chemistry (101/102), and physics (111/112;121/122) students with helpful, timely, and topical handouts – including study guides and practice problems! Make sure you watch your course’s Blackboard message for updates on the release of these materials and drop by to pick up your copy.


**PLEASE NOTE** Tutors will NOT be present at study hall sessions! For more support along these lines, please utilize the Academic Success Center’s resources.


BONUS: Some of your chemistry professors will be hosting their office hours in the TLC this semester!


During study hall, you are free to use one of the room’s many whiteboards and CNMS advisors/peers will be present to answer any questions you may have about effective study methods.  There is no better time or place to meet with some of your classmates and form a study group and/or jump right in to practice problems!

Tonight will be our club welcome/intro, where we'll introduce the Board and go over our plans for the semester. Also, we’ll have a Historian Presentation and a “Brief Introduction to Cyber”. Increasingly, companies spearheading artificial intelligence technology are relying on those with humanities expertise to engage in discussions about the design and deployment of AI. In recent years, corporations ranging from Boeing to Microsoft have hired philosophers, anthropologists, sociologists and experts in cultural studies to collaborate with technologists on the development of new AI tools. Even governments are calling on humanistic expertise as AI-innovations disperse through societies. What is the role of humanities in these spaces? What kinds of questions do humanists confront? Why is their expertise needed?

In this workshop, Professor Virginia Dignum will guide you through real-life examples of AI problems that have benefited from the critical, interpretive and analytical capabilities that humanities training can supply. Come to learn more about:
  • The types of questions humanities experts are called on to confront in the AI-space;
  • How humanistic and technical reasoning can collaborate, and why each has a role to play in the development of AI technology;
  • The skills you (as a humanist) have that you can apply to technological discussions;
  • Why your insights are necessary for a more equitable and just AI-driven society.

Virginia Dignum is Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University, Sweden where she leads the AI Policy Lab. She is also senior advisor on AI policy to the Wallenberg Foundations. She has a PHD in Artificial Intelligence from Utrecht University in 2004, is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association (EURAI). She is a member of the United Nations Advisory Body on AI, the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), UNESCO’s expert group on the implementation of AI recommendations, OECD’s Expert group on AI, founder of ALLAI, the Dutch AI Alliance, and co-chair of the WEF’s Global Future Council on AI. She was a member of EU’s High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence and leader of UNICEF's guidance for AI and children. Her new book The AI Paradox, is planned for publication in 2025.

Abstract:

Tunability and tailorability of ceramic microstructure is not a new nor unique concept. Many researchers have provided the rationale for the development of graded and tailored ceramic structures and interfaces as a means for unlocking unique and non-intrinsic mechanical and thermal response; the body of literature in this area is vast. Yet, the primary challenge yet to be overcome is the manufacturing science to enable the development of these cohesive, defect-free, tailorable materials designs. In this work, we highlight the efforts to (1) develop processing tools and capabilities to generate spatially-tailored bulk structural ceramics and interfaces, including the design and implementation of advanced manufacturing tools and adaptations of additive manufacturing approaches, (2) create design optimization tools to generate insight toward reducing defects and stresses during manufacturing and densification, and (3) demonstrate ability for tailoring of bulk ceramic specimens with discussion on current challenges that persist with current approaches.

Bio:

Lionel Vargas-Gonzalez is a materials engineer for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory, currently serving as Chief (A) of the Ceramics and Transparent Materials Branch. His research efforts have focused on the discovery, development and transition of materials and manufacturing sciences towards dismounted Soldier protection technologies. He received a BS degree in Ceramic and Materials Engineering in 2004 from Clemson University and a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering in 2009 from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

This semester, we want to incorporate filmmaking into the club's activities. As such, The Film Club is producing a short film to be completed during the course of the spring semester. We hope for this to be a fun and educational opportunity to channel our passion for film into something we can create and share together. This project is open to all skill levels, whether you have little to no experience, or you have already created things on your own, and everyone in between! We want this to be a low-stakes, stress-free project to allow for a chill and comfortable environment for everyone.

The project is a 10-20 minute sci-fi comedy film about a few friends and their quest to meet aliens. Our goal is to start production at the beginning of March and up through April. We hope to keep production days on weekends, but that could be subject to change. The screenplay is currently being written and is set to be finished by the end of February.

Note: This form is only an interest form and is non-committal. It does not sign you up for the production just yet! If you are interested in joining, along with filling out this form, come to our official Pitch Meeting on Wednesday, February 19 from 12-1pm in ILSB 116B where we will be providing further, in-depth details on the project. Hello everyone, thank you to those who were able to come to our first GBM of the semester! For those unable to attend, we hope to see you at our next meeting in March.

Our Pre-Allied Health Social is on February 26th, 6-8pm in the Commons Skylight Lounge! Everyone is welcome, and there will be tons of free food, games, and prizes from five of UMBC's Pre-Allied Health Societies. Attendance at the Social will also count towards earning your graduation cord! (See slides for details.)

For anyone who wants to go through future course planning one-on-one with a member of our E-board, please don't hesitate to message us on GroupMe. Remember, DPT program applications open a year in advance, so plan ahead and plan early!
