Day Three: Extravagant Love for His Disciples

John 13:1-17 (NIV)

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Reflection:
During the American Revolution a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers repairing a small defensive barrier. Their leader was shouting instructions, but making no attempt to help them. Asked why by the rider, he retorted with great dignity, “Sir, I am a corporal!”

The stranger apologized, dismounted, and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers. The job done, he turned to the corporal and said, “Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this and not enough men to do it, go to your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again.”

This stranger was none other than George Washington.

Jesus Christ’s act of servant-love in this passage breaks the norm and surprises the disciples, as they certainly would not expect their Teacher and Lord to do this. With His actions, Christ is ushering a new way of living and seeing the world- a model for future ministry. He encourages his disciples to follow His example and to do the same.

Responding to the Transmission:
We are also called to follow Christ’s example. And as we take up this calling we are encouraged by Christ’s own words, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

Let’s spend time in prayer, asking for the Spirit’s empowering to follow the example of Christ as we seek to live a life and ministry rooted in servant-love.

Tanner Almon ’02 has a lot on his plate, and everybody knows it.

That’s because the visual arts alum runs multiple blogs and Tumblr feeds chronicling his life, his photography and poetry — and pretty much anything else that strikes his fancy. The Huffington Post interviewed the Brooklyn-based artist this week about “My Daily Journal Thing,” which literally lists a daily to-do list and accompanying drawings each day.

HuffPost Arts: You have a lot of different projects on your website, what are you most passionate about? Photography or film?

Almon: I don’t know anymore. Film is where I started (at least it’s what I went to school for), but once I graduated and had no money I started taking photos and I really like that now too. Tumblr’s cool because I realized I really like writing off the wall stories and poems about my photos, if you look at tannerblog.com. So I don’t know, I really just like telling the stories in my head, it doesn’t really matter anymore if it’s photo or video or just written in a journal.

Apply to Fill 2 Rare SGA Vacancies

Two elected positions in SGA have become available: one each in the Senate and Finance Board. In addition, the Finance Board is looking for a Secretary to take minutes at its meetings. All three positions, with terms running through May 15, 2012, will be filled through an application and interview process (apply here). The application is due Friday, January 20th at 5:00 p.m. The students selected will have a chance to gain valuable experience before applications to run for positions in the 2012-2013 SGA are due in March.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground.

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: nearly $200,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.
There are 19 people in today’s Dissertation House in the Commons on UMBC’s campus. They’ve just taken a break to have a buffet lunch in the Skylight Room. This afternoon, Dr. Susan Han from UMBC’s University Counseling Services will be giving the DH Mini-lecture this afternoon.

We have people who have taken time off from their jobs to be here, busy Moms with young children (and a mom with a son who is also in grad school!), people who are working through balancing work and health, people from all walks of life. We have engineers, computer scientists, physicists, psychologists, public policy experts, environmental scientists, biologists, teacher education specialists, information technologists, etc. in the room today, and an even wider range of varying disciplines online. Thank you for joining in. You can do this! Go ahead … get it done!
