Apply to Fill 2 Rare SGA Vacancies Two elected positions in SGA have become available: one each in the Senate and Finance Board.  In addition, the Finance Board is looking for a Secretary to take minutes at its meetings.  All three positions, with terms running through May 15, 2012, will be filled through an application and interview process (apply here).  The application is due Friday, January 20th at 5:00 p.m.  The students selected will have a chance to gain valuable experience before applications to run for positions in the 2012-2013 SGA are due in March.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives.  Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues.  But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings.  Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground. 

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: nearly $200,000 this year.  Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions.  These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense.  Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions.  But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.

They’ve just taken a break to have a buffet lunch in the Skylight Room.  This afternoon, Dr. Susan Han from UMBC’s University Counseling Services will be giving the DH Mini-lecture this afternoon.

Co-op and get a lock on a full-time career! Co-ops joining the GE Appliances team have opportunities to complete innovative technical assignments in a variety of product areas including refrigeration, washer systems and cooking products. Our co-ops get to work on some of the newest innovations that will impact our environment. "Ecomagination" is our company-wide commitment to imagine and build innovative solutions that benefit our consumers and society at large. Some of these Eco-friendly products that our co-ops have contributed to are the GE Profile Harmony laundry pair, which delivers energy and water savings using a HydroMotion wash. If every U.S. household owning a washer not qualified ENERGY STAR were to replace it with a GE Profile Harmony washer, we could save enough water each year to fill nearly 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Plus our new refrigerators with ClimateKeeper2 technology, which keeps food garden-fresh longer. Refrigerators with FrostGuard defrost 20 percent less than conventional units, keeping frozen foods at their best. The system, working independently, uses a dual evaporator system to provide the best environment for fresh and frozen food. The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions over the life of all the GE ENERGY STAR -qualified refrigerators that were sold in 2005 is equivalent to eliminating more than 71,000 cars from U.S. roads for an entire year.

The benefits of this experience extend beyond the exciting work assignments and competitive wages. We value development and offer several training opportunities to enhance students' technical and professional development including, communication skills and resume writing. Our co-ops participate on committees of their peers that offer opportunities to network with the leaders of the company. The committees perform many community service activities such as mentoring/tutoring elementary students. The co-ops have many social events both in and out of work. These include lunches, weekend activities, sports, and cookouts.

Students who excel in our co-op program are given the opportunity to interview for full time opportunities through a Leadership Development Program. This is a 2 year program committed to growing our entry level, high potential employees who possess a passion for engineering, technical excellence and business skills by accelerating their development through technical training, leadership training and rotational assignments within challenging new product introductions, product development and innovative cost take out projects.

Basic Qualifications:

DoIT has received several reports of sluggish performance of the RT (Request Tracker) ticketing system. Initial attempts to adjust the system memory resources have not been successful, so DoIT staff members are exploring possible hardware issues. The Technology Support Center (TSC) can still be reached at 410.455.3838, but RT's current issues will affect the TSC staff's ability to update existing tickets. Meanwhile, several IT-related frequently asked questions (FAQs) are available from the myUMBC help menu or directly at www.umbc.edu/faq.
