Day Three – “Flash Point- the day after”

Luke 24:36-53

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

Reflection:

While listening to the two men telling what they just experienced, Jesus stands among them and greets them! They were so amazed and filled with joy, they couldn’t understand what Jesus was saying. However, Jesus brings them back to reality by asking for some food and they see that it is really Jesus who is among them. He teaches them how all the things that occurred had to happen to fulfill the Scriptures, and then tells them to stay until what the Father has promised has come and they have been clothed with power from above. So that’s what they did, they stayed worshipping and praising God.

Response:

It’s so exciting and wonderful to be in Christ. It’s amazing how He came and rescued us and how He wants us to tell others of His Good News. Let’s continue to worship God together in our communities, campuses and missional groups and may our worship and praise grow stronger and louder. Let’s also pray that He will clothe our communities, our campus ministries and our churches with His power that He will fill and empower us with the Holy Spirit so that we may go and preach the Good News to those around us.

Gingrich’s new stance on abortion didn’t help in Iowa

With nearly 50% of the votes in for the Iowa caucus, it’s clear that Gingrich’s refined – and newly stricter – stance on abortion just before the caucus didn’t help him garner support. At 10:30pm EST, coverage reporting 49% of the vote show a three-way tie between Romney (24%), Santorum (24%), and Paul (22%). It was reported that 46% of those predicted to caucus identified as “born again” or Evangelical.

Newt Gingrich has had a more “liberal” stance on a woman’s right to choose than the other candidates throughout the campaign, supporting exceptions be made in instances of rape and incest. However, when asked yesterday about his pro-life stance and his willingness to make exceptions, Gingrich replied,

No, I wouldn’t make exceptions.

Gingrich follows the tied pack of frontrunners with 13% of caucus support in reporting precincts – something that indicates his recent radicalization may not have made the difference he predicted.

Update: Now at 10:50pm EST, Romney leads with 25% of caucus support followed closely by Santorum (24%). Paul has fallen behind with 21% of support. Nearly 80% of precincts are reporting. Gingrich stays fourth with 13%.

UMBC Named to “Kiplinger 100: Best Values in Public Colleges”

UMBC has again made the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance list of the 100 best values in public higher education. The list ranks four-year colleges and universities that “combine outstanding education with economic value.”

This marks the third year in a row UMBC has appeared among Kiplinger’s best values. On the 2012 list released today, UMBC ranks 84 for in-state students and 63 for out-of-state. Four other Maryland universities made the list, highlighting the state’s commitment to both affordability and excellence in public higher education.

Kiplinger’s assesses quality and affordability based on a number of factors, including retention and graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratios, sticker prices and average debt at graduation. The full methodology is available here. The complete rankings are online at www.kiplinger.com/links/college, or in the February 2012 edition of Kiplinger’s magazine.

UMBC Chess Team Advances to the Final Four Following the “World Series of Chess”

The UMBC chess team came in second place on December 30 in the Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, advancing to the 2012 President’s Cup, known as the “Final Four” of chess.

The UMBC chess team headed into the 2011 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess

Championship with a record nine titles to its name. The competition known informally as the Pan-Am, was held December 27 to 30 in Fort Worth, Texas. Since the tournament began in 1946, dozens of universities throughout the Americas have participated. The Retrievers won their first Pan-Am title in 1996, and then embarked on a five-year title streak from 1998 to 2002.

This year, the University of Texas at Dallas came in first with six points, UMBC came in second with 5 points, and Texas Tech and New York University tied for third with 4.5 points each.

“It was an exciting finish, because we could have won right up until the last match,” says Alan Sherman, Chess Director. The University of Texas at Brownsville surprisingly did not make the cut for the Final Four even though they were the highest ranking team going into the tournament.

The UMBC team, all on chess scholarships, is composed of students not only with exceptional chess skills but also with strong academic records, Sherman says. UMBC requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA to maintain chess scholarships.

The Retrievers last won the Pan-Am title in 2009, and took second last year. This year’s team will compete in the 2012 President’s Cup, the “Final Four of College Chess,” to be held March 31–April 1 in Herndon, Va.
