I-Fest and first spring meeting this week! Dear creative writers,

Welcome to the spring semester! We are excited to be getting back into the swing of things and hope that you're rearing to get writing. We have two announcements this week:

Tuesday 2/4, Involvement Fest: come see us in the afternoon session from 1:30-3:30 pm in the Media & Performance section. We'll have a collaborative story written by passersby, so if you're there come add a twist!

Thursday 2/6, weekly meeting: our first meeting of this semester is this Thursday at 4-5 pm in the Fireside Lounge and we're excited to get back together, spend an hour writing and discussing our projects, ideas, and goals. This will be held the same time and place throughout the semester

Pre-lunar festival celebrated in Japan
Asian Studies Students,

While you are preparing for the start of the second week of the spring semester, in Japan today people are celebrating Setsubun (literally, "seasonal division"), a festival held on February 2, 3, or 4--one day before the start of spring in the Japanese lunar calendar.

In Japanese households people perform the ritual of throwing roasted beans while shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Devils/evil out, good luck in). 
The ritual is also performed at Japanese Buddhist temples, where celebrities, including kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, often participate by tossing beans from a stage to a crowd of spectators below.

Another tradition is to eat Eho-maki sushi rolls, while facing the luck direction of the year (Year of the Snake).

We are excited to announce that we will be launching the Summer Public Health Education and Research Experience (SPHERE) at Northeastern University this summer. The program is targeted to undergraduates who have not yet had opportunity to have this type of intensive, mentored research experience. 

 

Here are some key details about the program:

  • Takes place May 28th to August 5th – a week and a half of instruction followed by 8 weeks in research labs
  • The program is held at the Northeastern University Boston Campus giving you the opportunity to study in the heart of Boston, a hub for education, innovation, and healthcare.
  • A $6,000 stipend is provided plus food and travel expenses
  • Skills the program teaches include how to conduct research, analyze data, and communicate findings effectively.
  • The goal of the program is to provide students with hands-on mentoring, professional development, and a vibrant academic community to help them gain tools to excel.
  • February 24th application deadline

 

Research training includes methods in epidemiology, health communication, health education, prevention science, health informatics, health psychology, and biostatistics. Content areas include addictive behaviors, physical activity, sexual health behavior, stigma, stress, and HIV.

Appointments available M-F from 9am-5pm and select evenings. Appointments may be scheduled online (via Handshake), by phone (410-455-2216) or by stopping by the Career Center (Math/Psych 201).

You can also simply stop by for a Drop-in Monday through Thursday from 2pm-4pm. These 15-minute in-person sessions are held at the Career Center (Math/Psych 201), for resumé and cover letter critiques, Handshake questions, or an overview of our services. No appointment needed. We wanted to send a reminder to our departments and new hires that the General Inquiry queue is here for you and any/all questions you may have no matter how big or small. If we cannot complete an action we can connect you with some of our colleagues across campus who can!

Here are some tips and tricks for using the General Inquiry Queue in RT:

The General Inquiry (GI) queue should be used anytime a department or individual has any question regarding processes currently handled by the AAOU SSC. If you have questions regarding:

• Policy & Procedure
• How to submit a ticket?
• SSC services & more...

Send the question our way!

If your question requires additional attention we are happy to also hop on a WebEx call after a ticket is submitted to help with any questions, concerns, etc. If you have a question about a ticket, it is always best to reach out to us beforehand to ask questions on how to accurately and completely submit your RT request and obtain guidance from us --submitting a ticket correctly the first time will prevent rejections, duplication of effort, and processing delays.
