<Title>Global Game Jam 2012</Title>

    <div class="html-content">The Global Game Jam is a yearly event where participants at sites all over the world try to make games on a common theme in the same 48 hour period over the last weekend in January.<div><br></div><div>UMBC has been a Global Game Jam site since the very beginning, four years ago. Many Global Game Jam sites have to charge a registration fee, but thanks to the continued support by Columbia, MD-based <a href="http://www.nextcentury.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Next Century Corporation</a>, we are able to be totally free!  It is not necessary to be a UMBC student to participate at the UMBC site, but we are limited to the first 40 participants, so register now at <a href="http://www.globalgamejam.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">globalgamejam.org</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>There are more details at <a href="http://gaim.umbc.edu/global-game-jam/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">gaim.umbc.edu/global-game-jam</a>, including site hours, what to expect, and just what this Game Jam thing is anyway.     <p>The on-campus setting provides Dissertation House participants with productive and rewarding scholastic engagement. Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations. Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.</p>
    <p>This is a weekday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., non-residential) commitment set for the week of Tuesday, January 17 – Friday, January 20, 2012.</p>

    <p>Seats are limited. <Title>Ellen Handler Spitz, Honors College, to Give Talks in India</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The English Alumni Association of <a href="http://www.ravenshawuniversity.ac.in/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ravenshaw University</a> in Cuttack, India, has invited Ellen Handler Spitz, honors college professor of visual arts, to give the first annual alumni lecture on January 8, 2012.  Spitz will also give the keynote address at the <a href="http://ravenshawuniversity.ac.in/File/Viraj/The%20Politics%20of%20Children%20Literature.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">International Seminar on Children’s Literature and Politics</a>, which will be held at the university January 9-10, 2012.</p>
    <p>The Alumni Lecture and the seminar are expected to attract many distinguished alumni, including lawmakers from the Indian Parliament, writers, judges in the Supreme Court of India, the Chief Information Commissioner of India, civil servants, and academics.</p>
    <p>In addition to these lectures, Spitz will also meet with Indian school children.</p></div>

<Title>Students Receive Scholarships to Study in Taiwan</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Several students have received Huayu Enrichment Scholarships (HES) from the Taiwan Ministry of Education to study Mandarin in Taiwan from June-August, 2012. The students are Niesha Watts ’14, applied linguistics; Amy Fowler ’12, Asian studies and interdisciplinary studies; Vadim Rubin ’10, history, and ’12 Asian studies; and Jillian Long ’13, Chinese. Initial contact with the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Representatives Office (TECRO) in Washington, D.C., was made by Eugene Schaffer, chair of education.
