<Title>6th Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>You are invited to participate in the <span>6</span><sup>th</sup> Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat. The retreat is sponsored by the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMCP).</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The purpose of the retreat is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate who are majoring or who are planning to major in engineering and/or computer science to build their career, professional, and leadership skills; as well as to network with corporations and student leaders from 4-year colleges/universities and 2-year community colleges in the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis area. The 2011 retreat included students from: George Mason University, George Washington University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery College, Morgan State University, Prince George’s Community College, UMBC, and UMCP.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The retreat provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to network with students from local colleges and universities who are studying engineering and/or computer science.  The retreat will be held January 21-22, 2012 (this is the weekend before classes begin at UMCP, UMBC, Morgan, Johns Hopkins).  The retreat will be held at the Sheraton Columbia in Columbia, MD.  The retreat is a two-day retreat with one (1) overnight stay.  There is no cost to students to participate in the retreat.  Students who participate have to commit to participating in all retreat activities over the course of the two days.  Transportation is provided, additional information will be forthcoming to students who participate. </span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The retreat is funded by the CIA, W. L. In the morning session participants will learn the principles of good course design, including designing assignments and assessments that help students achieve the goals for their learning. In the afternoon session faculty will apply the principles of good course design from the morning session to planning a hybrid course (part-online, part face-to-face).  This workshop is open to all full or part time UMBC faculty.      trips are student-run, week long service engagement trips designed to 
    challenge students and combat civic issues underlying larger societal 
    concerns such as homelessness, intellectual disabilities, animal rights,
     health care, and the environment.  The ASB trips included for Spring 
    2012 are:<br>

    <div><span>The Arc trip involves students serving the mentally and physically disabled population at the Arc of Carroll County. </span></div>

    <br><span>The Environmental trip has a focus on sustainable living in urban environments. </span><br>
    <span><br>The TEAR trip (Through the Eyes of a Refugee) serves the refugee population of Baltimore.<br><br>The Animal Advocacy trip explores several aspects of animal rights and humane treatment of animals.<br>
    <br>The Day in the Life trip focuses on the homeless population of Baltimore City.</span></div><div><div><span><br>

    <div><span>The cost of each trip is approximately $75.00 to cover expenses such as food and gas during the trip.     <p>All  iCubed study group participants (that's you!) currently in a study group are eligible to enter.   Please fill out the study group registration form (attached) and return to me by <strong>4pm</strong> <strong>FRIDAY</strong>, <strong>December 2nd</strong>,  to be entered into a raffle to win 2 PIZZAS for you and your study group on UMBC Study Day (December 14th).   </p>
    <p>For those of you not in a study group yet, contact me and I can help you find one.   I am currently forming study groups for most science/math classes including Math 106, Math150, Math151, Biol141, Chem101, etc!!!</p>

This year's conference is titled "Reimagining IT in a Changing Landscape" and will focus on the need to reimagine, reinvent, and innovate in a climate of constant change and challenge.
