Intrinsically Worthless Objects of Great Value

The moment itself is no longer in my memory, but its marker persists. Probably the ceremony took place at a party the night before the first of us left for college. Four close friends, about to leap away from each other into the unknown, searched for a way to signify our bond, which we hoped would endure across the months and miles. I'm pretty sure it was Barak who had the inspiration to pull a dollar bill from his wallet, rip it neatly into four pieces, and solemnly hand a shred to each of us, to keep forever.

The following summer, when I was working in a laminating shop (long story), I heat-sealed my piece of the dollar in plastic.

Some years after that, the three of us who were still regularly in touch (but not often in the same city) were walking back to our cars after dinner together at El Coyote restaurant in Los Angeles. Barak asked us to pull the dollar fragments out of our wallets. He and I produced ours, but our friend David discovered his was missing. He was upset; it seemed to affirm our growing distance. I think I was the one who pulled out another dollar, ripped it into thirds and gave each of my friends a piece. In that moment the gesture was nothing more than a Band-Aid on a gaping wound. But I confirmed recently that 20 years later, each of us still has our piece of the El Coyote dollar.

Mine lives in a special wooden box along with the laminated fragment from the first dollar and other intrinsically worthless personal treasures. Here is the sign that used to hang on the wall outside my office when I was an unhappy lawyer: "Mr. Hoffman," so perfectly capturing my reduction during those years to a creature of the firm. Now, in my treasure box, it's a symbol of adversity overcome. Here is the brochure, obtained at my UCLA freshman orientation session, which guided me into the student government (and, indirectly, to everything that has flowed from that involvement, including my career), a symbol of how everyday choices can change everything. Here is the temporary library card I obtained when I was 3 years old, featuring what might well have been my first-ever attempt to write my own name. Now the card stands for the continuity of some of my interests and personality across decades.

I love helping people to recognize their power, and one of the most wonderful sources of power available to all of us is our capacity to make meaning. You, too, can transform ordinary objects, ordinary moments, ordinary encounters into wellsprings of inspiration and significance sending ripples across space and time.

No doubt you've already done so. I hope you'll share how in a comment.

Introducing Freedom Week!

<Tagline>Celebrating the freedom of our nation</Tagline>

Everyone loves freedom, so why not celebrate it?

Starting November 7 and going until November 11, UMBC Young
Americans for Freedom will be hosting a series of events from 11am until 1 pm
in the Commons breezeway on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday that will seek to
celebrate the freedom that we have here in the United States.

On Monday, we will feature FREE ‘freedom’ food along with
some information about our nation’s freedom and what it mean. This will lead to
our event on Wednesday, which will highlight World Freedom Day, a little-known
holiday established by President George Bush in 2001 to celebrate the collapse
of the Berlin Wall. We will also have a lot of information on economic and
social freedoms. Finally, we will be celebrating Veteran’s Day on Friday by
honoring our troops and the sacrifices they have made to ensure our lasting
    freedom in America.

Throughout the week, we will be collecting donations for the
Wounded Warrior Project, a program that works with our brave soldiers who have
been seriously injured during their service. Through this program, they can
receive assistance and other services as they seek to return to their lives
here at home. To learn more, visit woundedwarriorproject.org.

Please come out and get free food, meet new people, and bask
in the glories of our freedom here in the United States. Healthy debate is
highly encouraged. We look forward to seeing you there!

Check out the Facebook Event, too!

Remotegrity: First Voter-Verifiable Internet Voting...

Full Title: Remotegrity: First Voter-Verifiable Internet Voting for Public Office

Some of this text was adapted from a press release and a post from the Scantegrity blog

UMBC Professor Alan Sherman, UMBC alumnus Rick Carback (Ph.D. 2010) and many former and current UMBC students helped to develop Scantegrity, an an open source election verification technology for optical scan voting systems. In 2009, their Scantegrity II voting system was used in the election of the mayor and city council members of Takoma Park, Maryland. This was an historic first time any end-to-end voter verifiable voting system with ballot privacy has been used in a binding governmental election.

This week, absentee voters in Takoma Park, Maryland will have the option to cast their votes for mayor and city council using a new Internet voting system called Remotegrity which uses the same approach of generating privacy preserving confirmation numbers that allow each voter to verify her vote is counted and anyone to verify that all the votes were counted correctly. Dr. Carback has played a significant role in helping Takoma Park adopt and use Scantegrity and Remotegrity in the municipal elections.

Internet voting has been used to elect government officials before (for example, in Switzerland, Estonia, and Norway), but what is new here is that voters mail in paper ballots and use the Internet to independently verify that their votes have been received by the city and recorded correctly. Anyone can check online that the recorded votes were tallied correctly.

Dr. Filip Zagorski, computer scientist at The George Washington University, explains ÒThrough the hybrid use of paper ballots and Internet verification, Remotegrity combines the best of both worlds to provide a very high degree of security even against malware and insider attack.Ó Portions of the underlying research in cryptography and secure server design were supported by the National Science Foundation and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Voters who have requested to vote by mail receive a ballot which they mark and mail in, but they can also verify their vote on-line in the Remotegrity system, without revealing how they voted. In future elections, the same online procedure may cast votes and physical mailing of paper ballots may be optional or omitted.

The city will also use the Scantegrity voting system for voters who cast their ballot in person, as it did in 2009. The integrated Scantegrity and Remotegrity systems offer full end-to-end voter-verifiability, in which voters casting ballots from home or in person can verify that their votes were correctly cast, collected, and counted.

Additionally, this year, the city will provide an audio interface for marking ballots. The interface, named Audiotegrity, developed by researchers at The George Washington University, will enable voters with difficulty marking paper ballots to mark ballots independently using an electronic interface. Mr. Noel Runyan, a usability and accessibility expert, provided pro bono design advice to the Audiotegrity team.

With a grant from the federal Election Assistance Commission, and support from the non-profit Voting Systems Institute, researchers from UMBC will survey voters and election officials as well as conduct focus groups around their experiences using these new voting systems.
