It’s Nice To Be ICE

Have you ever tried to bust an illegal alien only to see them escape ’cause you didn’t have one of those pesky search warrants?

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) shares your dilemma, but they have a solution. Forget the warrant!

ICE is being sued by the ACLU for violating the fourth amendment when on October 20, 2010, they raided an apartment complex in Tennessee.

The suit is being filed on behalf of 15 residents who were subject to ICE’s warrant-less search.

The ACLU argues:

The Fourth Amendment strictly prohibits warrant-less intrusions into private homes and the Constitution’s protections apply to both citizens and non-citizens alike. In the absence of a judicially authorized warrant, there must be voluntary and knowing consent; ICE officers forcing themselves into someone’s home does not constitute consent.

Agents allegedly broke through the door holding the residents at gun point and shouting racial slurs. When asked to produce a warrant one was quoted saying “We don’t need a warrant, we’re ICE.”

The fourth amendment states:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

What do you think, is the ACLU’s interpretation of the fourth amendment accurate?

Day 2: Be faithful with the little things…

Luke 16:10-12 (NIV)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Reflection:

Many of us have heard the phrase “be faithful with the little things”. It’s a process that we all have had or will have to go through in order to be entrusted with more. It permeates our society from determining our credit limits to our job responsibilities. So why is it important to be faithful with what we’ve been given? Because as more is entrusted to us, more of God’s glory can be shown through our lives. However, the same applies when we are dishonest and as it says above, “if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?”

Response:

Let’s thank God and pray that we would be found faithful in stewarding all that He has entrusted to us. Let’s also pray for our missional groups and campus ministries, that as God continues to help us to be faithful, that we would be entrusted with more to His glory.

Although a lost season would negatively impact related businesses, such as sports bars, some suggest keeping a sense of perspective. Compared to the possible negative economic impact of a lost NFL season—recently averted—Coates argues that a lost NBA season would be “a drop in the bucket. The industry is just too small.” NBC notes that both fans and local business continue to hope for a resolution.
