On Wednesday September 28^th, Chris Jeffery was the guest for the Entrepreneurship Speaker Series hosted by the Alex Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. Students gathered to listen in on his story of starting a company that hosted restaurant menus online and eventually moved into the online ordering and advertisement business. LocalUp Solutions, LLC is now managing 55 different markets across the nation, each getting their own locally-branded website.

Baltimore’s very own EATbmore.com is outfitted with a wide variety of restaurants to choose from in the downtown Baltimore area. You can browse the site using the A-Z search or filter by neighborhood to find a new place to eat. All of the menus are right there for your viewing pleasure.

Starting October 10^th, online ordering will be available for many of the restaurants! After you find the perfect menu item, just click the “order” button on the EATbmore site and your transaction will be securely processed. iPhone and Android apps are available to make ordering easier when you are on the go.

Check out the site and comment below to let us know what you think! Also, Mr. Jeffery hopes to expand the site to include restaurants in the Catonsville and Arbutus area so stay tuned for that.

This is a paid undergraduate position. Dr. Shaun Kane from the Department of Information Systems is seeking motivated undergraduate students to help develop new interactive technologies. 

Project: Work with Dr. Kane and other students to construct a working touch screen-based tabletop computer, similar to the Microsoft Surface. Help to develop construction plan, acquire materials, assemble hardware, configure software, and test the system.

Skills Required: Basic experience with installing and configuring computer software is required. Experience with computer programming,computer hardware, and woodworking are are a plus, but are not required.

Time Commitment: Up to 10 hours per week with a total of 60 to 80 hours per semester. Flexible work hours with mandatory weekly supervisory meetings and periodic project-group meetings.

Expected Duration: This project will begin in the fall 2011 semester, and may continue for the spring 2012 semester.

Eligibility: This offer is open to undergraduate students who are in their first 4 semesters at UMBC.

In previous years we have received anywhere from 60-90 applications form high school girls wanting to participate, and we have been able to have major impacts on the lives of young women through the program. Data collected from pre- and post-event evaluations of the 2011 Bits and Bytes program participants show the program’s impact:

• enthusiasm for the field of engineering or IT =  82% before, 100% after.
  

• knowledge about opportunities available in IT or engineering = 24% before, 88% after.
  

• confidence about entering an engineering or IT career =  71% before, 94% after.
  

• knowledge of support for women in engineering or IT =  30% before, 88% after.
  

• confidence about fitting into the college environment = 70% before, 100% after.
