Thank you to those who attended and participated in the first Full-Circle Climate Communication Workshop held at UMBC between January 13 to 17, 2025. The workshop successfully brought together over 50 people from a wide range of disciplines and with varied expertise to consider how best to communicate issues regarding climate resilience. 


During the workshop, participants were challenged to strategize and develop new and innovative ways to communicate in a transdisciplinary team. Each team consisted of a variety of experts from a wide range of fields that included but were not limited to Public Policy, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Visualization, Visual Arts, Performance Arts, Geography, Storytelling, Media Communication, and Behavioral Sciences. 


We truly thank everyone who made the workshop a success.

Deep Learning for Ice Calving Front Analysis: Advancing Understanding through AI-Driven Techniques

Abstract
Ice calving, the process where large ice masses detach from a glacier’s terminus, is a significant driver of ice mass loss and contributes to global sea-level rise. In ice calving, ice calving fronts refer to the terminus regions where these events occur, often producing icebergs as large as Manhattan, which eventually fragment into smaller pieces, or "chicklets." These chicklets, influenced by environmental forces such as ocean currents and winds, follow complex trajectories that can disrupt maritime routes. Although traditional methods for monitoring ice-calving fronts rely heavily on manual reviews of time series satellite imagery, they are time-intensive, prone to human error, and lack scalability. Recent advances in deep learning have introduced automation in segmenting ice-calving fronts, but critical challenges such as predicting future calving front positions and forecasting chicklet trajectories remain underexplored. This thesis addresses three fundamental challenges in understanding and predicting ice-calving processes. First, it tackles the challenge of accurate segmentation of ice calving fronts, characterized by sparse pixel representation, through SEATTNET, a novel hybrid attention model that combines squeeze-and-excitation (SE) blocks with spatial attention gates to enhance feature representation and segmentation accuracy. Second, it explores forecasting future ice-calving front position, where the absence of explicit spatiotemporal data and the nonlinear nature of latitude-longitude temporal sequences present significant challenges. To address these, a georeferenced dataset derived from segmentation masks is utilized alongside the GlaSpectra model, which employs spectral convolution layers along with FFT and IFFT to capture global and local spatial relationships, enabling precise trajectory forecasting. Finally, this thesis also proposes to tackle the challenge of predicting the movement of calved ice fragments, known as icebergs or "chicklets," whose trajectories are highly unpredictable due to the influence of ocean currents, winds, and other environmental factors. To address this, we used spatiotemporal data of iceberg movement over time and applied ConvLSTM layers to capture both the spatial patterns and temporal dynamics. To make predictions more accurate, we developed a custom drift loss function that focuses on two key aspects: how the size and shape of the chicklets change over time and how their movement patterns evolve. The loss function incorporates the principle that the larger the volume of the ice mass, the slower its movement pattern is likely to be, ensuring that the model captures this critical physical relationship. This approach enables our proposed deep learning based model to not only predict the trajectory of the icebergs but also understand the relationship between their motion and their changing dimensions. By addressing these complexities, this research not only advances the use of AI in glaciology, offering practical, and scalable, tools for studying and predicting ice calving and its after-effect of ice chicklets behavior, but also has potential applications in studying landslide movements, and coastal erosion movement.

All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Student work will be shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated.

Dear UMBC Community, 
 
In my temporary role as co-leader of the Division of Administration and Finance, I am writing to inform the campus community that UMBC Police Chief Bruce Perry is on administrative leave from his role. During this time, Captain David Fields, patrol bureau commander with the University of Maryland Police Department, is serving as acting chief of the department. He is joined by Lieutenant Ed McDermott, executive officer to the chief of the University of Maryland Police Department. At UMBC, Lieutenant McDermott is serving in a chief of staff role for the police department, supporting Acting Chief Fields in his leadership. 
 
We are grateful to them both for providing this critical service to the department and to the university broadly. The safety and security of the UMBC community is of primary importance. We will provide further information as it becomes available and appropriate to share.

Please see the below message from Student Conduct and Community Standards: 

As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct.

Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, this is an opportunity for staff members to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation. 

This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience."  Unfortunately, most of the staff in Residential Life have baked-in conflicts that prevent them from serving in this capacity. Here are the hearing dates and times (ALL VIRTUAL, AT THIS TIME) that I have lined up thus far for the Spring Semester of 2025 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest to fill):


  • Friday, 2/21 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 2/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
  • Friday, 2/28 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
  • Friday, 3/7 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 3/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
  • Friday, 4/4 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
  • Friday, 4/11 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
  • Friday, 4/18 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
  • Friday, 4/25 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 4/30 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
  • Friday, 5/2 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
  • Friday, 5/9 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 5/14 10:00 AM-3:00 PM (Study Day)

Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our afternoon hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.

I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date.
