Dear UMBC Community,

In my temporary role as co-leader of the Division of Administration and Finance, I am writing to inform the campus community that UMBC Police Chief Bruce Perry is on administrative leave from his role. During this time, Captain David Fields, patrol bureau commander with the University of Maryland Police Department, is serving as acting chief of the department. He is joined by Lieutenant Ed McDermott, executive officer to the chief of the University of Maryland Police Department. At UMBC, Lieutenant McDermott is serving in a chief of staff role for the police department, supporting Acting Chief Fields in his leadership.

We are grateful to them both for providing this critical service to the department and to the university broadly. The safety and security of the UMBC community is of primary importance. We will provide further information as it becomes available and appropriate to share.

Representatives Needed for Virtual Student Conduct Hearings and Appeals

Please see the below message from Student Conduct and Community Standards:

As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct.

Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, this is an opportunity for staff members to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation.

This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience." Unfortunately, most of the staff in Residential Life have baked-in conflicts that prevent them from serving in this capacity. Here are the hearing dates and times (ALL VIRTUAL, AT THIS TIME) that I have lined up thus far for the Spring Semester of 2025 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest to fill):

Friday, 2/21 1:00 PM-6:00 PM

Wednesday, 2/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)

Friday, 2/28 9:00 AM-2:00 PM

Friday, 3/7 9:00 AM-2:00 PM

Wednesday, 3/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)

Friday, 4/4 9:00 AM-2:00 PM

Wednesday, 5/14 10:00 AM-3:00 PM (Study Day)

Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our afternoon hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.

With all that said, please consult your calendar and send Jeff Cullen an email at jcullen@umbc.edu with the date(s) you are available and willing to help out. I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date. Thanks again for your support of this important task!

Join UMBC's Sunflower Program

<Tagline>Show your support for hidden disabilities!</Tagline>

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower movement began in the United Kingdom just a few years ago and has quickly become a symbol of support and understanding in public spaces across Great Britain, Ireland, and Scotland.

If you see someone wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, please offer patience and understanding—they may need more time or support. By displaying a sunflower on your office door, reception desk, or waiting area, you signal to those with hidden disabilities that they are welcome, understood, and supported.

What is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower?
Living with a hidden disability can make daily life more challenging, and it’s not always easy for others to recognize or comprehend those struggles. Wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a discreet way for individuals to communicate that they have a hidden disability and may need additional support or understanding.

This movement has already made a significant impact in the UK, and with your help, we can bring the same level of awareness and inclusivity to the UMBC community.

How to Participate in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Training

Join our training module on Blackboard to learn more about supporting individuals with hidden disabilities.

Follow the group: UMBC Sunflower Program

Access the training on the group's page: Once enrolled, you’ll find the training module under the "Organization" section of Blackboard.

Complete the requirements: Watch the two short training videos and fill out the exit form.

Upon successful completion of the training, you will receive a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower (sticker or button) to proudly display as a sign of support and inclusivity!

Let’s work together to make UMBC a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone!

Welcome Spring 2025 Semester

Happy Spring Semester Everyone!

We hope you all had a wonderful winter break and wonderful
first day back! There will be no meetings this week so you can focus on
settling into your classes. Official meetings will begin on February 11th, which
means there will be no meetings this week, but stay tuned for details about an
    unofficial meeting before then.

I also have a significant announcement to share. I, Matthew Green, will be
stepping down as Vice President of the UMBC Tabletop Gaming Club as I am no
longer a student, having completed my studies. The leadership team is currently
discussing who will take on the Vice President role for the remainder of the
term, and we will share updates soon.

It has been an incredible experience serving as the club’s
Vice President for the past year and a half. I look forward to visiting as an
alumnus and watching the club continue to thrive. I wish you all a fantastic
semester and plenty of fun at the club!

Welcome to the Spring 2025 semester. Please consider
nominating yourself for the position of Graduate Student Association Elections
    Committee Co-Chair!

Eligibility

The Elections Committee will be co-chaired by:

A
sitting senator or cabinet member with at least one full year of
          experience within the GSA.

A
graduate student who is not currently an officer of the GSA in a role of
either the “officers of the cabinet,” or a position as “committee chair,”
          or “senator.”

Please note! You will be ineligible to run for any other
positions in GSA in the spring 2025 elections if you chair or serve on this
committee. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone planning to graduate
in 2025 (since as a result you would be ineligible to run anyway).

Roles and Responsibilities

    Oversight
of Elections: The committee will oversee all aspects of the election
process, from candidate registration to campaigning, voting, and the
         announcement of results.

    Rule-Making:
The committee will establish clear rules for elections, including
eligibility requirements, campaign regulations, and voting procedures.
These rules will be reviewed annually and made publicly available to all
         students.

    Candidate
Vetting: The committee will ensure that all candidates meet
eligibility criteria and adhere to campaign guidelines.

    Complaint
Resolution: The committee will have the authority to receive, review,
and resolve any complaints related to the election process. Decisions made
by the committee in this regard will be final.

    Publication
of Results: The committee will be responsible for the transparent and
         timely publication of election results.

Once the Committee has completed these responsibilities
(likely no later than April 2025), your service would end.

As a member of the GSA Executive Council, you would be in a
position of service and support to the GSA. If you are elected, you will be
expected to begin work immediately and to work for approximately 7 hours per
week. You must be able to participate in online meetings every Monday from
12:30-2 PM and, once a month, on Friday from 12-2 PM. As part of this job, you
will be responsible for collaborating with other members of the GSA Executive
Council, attending important GSA events, and other duties as required. You will
receive a stipend for your work.

Nomination Process
To nominate yourself, please submit your name, student ID number,
photograph/headshot, brief biography (50-100 words), and statement as to your
qualifications and interest in the role (100-300 words), by Monday, 3 Feb 2025.
If you are qualified according to the Graduate School, you should participate
in the election, which will take place during the GSA Special Senate meeting on
14 Feb 2025 from 1-2 PM EST (online). Depending on the number of applicants,
you may be able to give a speech and/or answer questions before the vote that
    day.
of other Gmail accounts) to access it.

Please email me at gsapresident@umbc.edu if

Starting the Spring Semester

Dear UMBC Community,

The first day of classes is always an exciting day, and today is no exception. I am optimistic for what is to come and grateful for the opportunity to begin a new semester with all of you.

To be sure, we start this semester in a challenging and complicated context. I know that many of us are particularly concerned about the potential effects on higher education of various executive orders and related actions of the new administration in Washington. I want to acknowledge your very real concerns about the potential for direct impacts on individuals, as well as on the education we provide and the research we pursue.

We are monitoring the developments out of Washington closely. I have assembled a core team of relevant leaders that will meet weekly to understand the changes and how they may affect UMBC. The team will draw on the expertise of the members of the UMBC community to analyze the implications for UMBC and to develop recommendations for how we proceed. As we do, we will keep you apprised.

I want to offer a reminder of ongoing support for all members of our community, including this short list of relevant resources:

Office of Research Development

Office of International Students and Scholars

Employee Assistance Program

Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b)

Office of Equity and Civil Rights

Retriever Integrated Health

In this moment, as in any, we will continue to lead with our mission and vision and remain grounded in our shared values. We will not retreat from our mission as a research university that advances the public good nor from our commitment to creating a campus environment that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all.

UMBC’s vision statement remains our north star, and I think it bears repeating today:

Our UMBC community redefines excellence in higher education through an inclusive culture that connects innovative teaching and learning, research across disciplines, and civic engagement. We will advance knowledge, economic prosperity, and social justice by welcoming and inspiring inquisitive minds from all backgrounds.

I am even more inspired by that vision today than I was the first time I heard it, and I am more committed than ever to working with you to achieve it. My best wishes to all of you as we begin the spring semester together.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby
