Securing Distributed Networks: Leveraging Reinforcement Learning and Game Theory for Attack Detection and Mitigation

Reinforcement learning (RL) has demonstrated remarkable success across diverse domains, from mastering complex games to optimizing real-time feedback systems in robotics and industrial control. However, its potential in cybersecurity, particularly for autonomous attack detection and mitigation in distributed systems, remains largely underexplored. Traditional single-agent RL approaches struggle in decentralized environments where multiple entities make independent decisions, necessitating multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). Our research explores blockchain networks as an ideal test case due to their decentralized architecture and trustless consensus mechanisms. We developed a novel MARL-based consensus mechanism for Proof-of-Stake blockchains, enabling nodes to collaboratively identify and penalize malicious behavior while preserving decentralization. This approach effectively mitigated six major blockchain attack types with minimal computational overhead. Building on these results, we propose integrating game-theoretic principles into the MARL framework to model adversarial strategies and enhance system resilience. The synergy between reinforcement learning and game theory establishes a robust foundation for dynamic and adaptive security in distributed systems, effectively addressing current vulnerabilities while anticipating and countering future threats. This integrated approach enables the design of resilient, scalable defense mechanisms tailored to the complex dynamics of decentralized architectures.
Dr. Md Tariqul Islam is an Assistant Professor of Trustworthy Cyberspace in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University. His research focuses on advancing the security, efficiency, and fault tolerance of networks and distributed systems, particularly in the domains of cloud and blockchain technologies.

Back on My Feet is an organization that empowers people to achieve economic independence through fitness and community. They work with people experiencing homelessness and/or addiction who currently reside within shelters and recovery centers. They walk and run 3 mornings a week to build a sense of community and responsibility, and then support members as they work toward finding sustainable employment and self-sufficiency.

Announcement: New Bus Stop Additions and Updates
Improved access to existing Transit bus routes - Spring 2025
Dear Valued Riders and Campus Community,
In keeping with our mission to be Safe, Reliable, and Responsive, we are excited to announce several updates and additions to our bus routes to enhance accessibility and service for our riders. These changes will take effect on Monday, January 27, 2025, for the Spring 2025 Semester.
Please note that while the bus stop signs for these locations are currently being manufactured, they will be installed shortly after the launch date. Here are the details of these updates:

Relocated Stop (#6): Baltimore St. & MLK Jr. Blvd.
- The stop has been moved to a more central location outside The Harbor Bank of Maryland building.

Reinstalled Stop (#11): Frederick Rd & Bishop’s Ln.
- During the upcoming stop installations, this stop will be reinstalled with new anti-theft hardware.

MEMS Iannone Travel Abroad Fellowship

The Caroline Iannone Travel Abroad Fellowship provides around $1200 to go towards a MEMS student's research abroad.
This year is the third year we are offering this award.
Past winners include Amina Thiam (History) and Leonardo Swafford (English), and both went on to do amazing work from the research they did.
Supplementary questions applicants will need to answer are:
- Where do you plan to travel and what archive(s) will you visit? Have you made sure the archives will be open during your stay? Have you gotten any approvals you might need from the archives to visit?
- What are the goals of your research? How do you imagine using your findings?
- This scholarship covers $1200 in travel expenses. What is your plan for obtaining the rest of the money needed for this trip?
