Day 2: What am I to do?

Exodus 17:1-7 (NIV)

1 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?” 3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The LORD answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

Numbers 12:10-13 (NIV)

10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous—it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.” 13 So Moses cried out to the LORD, “Please, God, heal her!”

Reflection:

From books and media, to advice from people we know and meet, there seems to be a million ways we are presented with to cope with life and to be cured from mistakes we’ve made in the past. From the Exodus and Numbers passages, it’s clear that Moses knew what to do, for he knew who his source of life and sustenance was. Although it seems that the Israelites and Miriam deserved to suffer the consequences of their sin, God who is rich in mercy, answered Moses’ prayer and provided exactly what they needed. Whether it’s a need for provision, physical healing, or even healing of our hearts and minds, let’s be encouraged and reminded that God is our Source, and in His grace and mercy, He does not withhold His blessing, but graciously provides us with all that we need.

Response:

Let’s thank and praise God that He is our Source and our Salvation. Spend time remembering His wonderful deeds, provision, and healing in our lives and in our church. Then let’s pray for ourselves and our campus ministries/missional groups; that we would turn to the Lord again and again with hearts full of trust and confidence in our God, who alone is our Source of Life, our Salvation, our Provider and our Healer.

Experiment In Progress

I was not quite six years old. I didn't have much of a vocabulary, and found TV shows other than cartoons utterly boring. But my tiny, everyday world was filled with mind-stretching mysteries. What would it be like to have an older sister? Where did dreams come from? Could somebody start at 1 and actually count as high as 100,000?

My reading about dinosaurs begged more questions, of course, about what it would be like to be twenty times the size of an elephant, and about the experience of time: Those millions of years since the mighty creatures walked the earth stirred my imagination. Even the lifetimes of my parents (aged 29 and 36) seemed impossibly long, and I tried to envision being able to look back on so vast a stretch of time. The really captivating thing was that I had a mind and memory of my own, and could experience of time passing, and so had direct access to the glimmer of a hint of the answers to some of my questions.

And so, one summer morning, I decided to run my own private experiment. I came up with it as I was putting on my sandals (made from recycled tires, with real tire treads on the soles), on the shaggy blue carpet in the bedroom I shared with my brother, before running outside to play with friends. The experiment was to try to remember that moment for as long as I could: across the months and years, even as I grew older, even older than my parents were then. It's possible I hoped that by doing so I would hold on to a piece of the little boy who thought about time and dinosaurs, so that I would never fully experience whatever awful transition seemed to have drained most adults of their passion for such things.

The month was August; the year, 1973. The memory persists. The experiment continues.

Talk: Smart Grid Demand Response, 4pm Wed 8/17

Demand Response; What is it and
What are the Business Opportunities?

Dr. Bjorn Frogner

4:00pm Wednesday, 17 August 2011
Maryland Clean Energy Technology Incubator
UMBC South Campus

Bjorn will discuss the aspect of the Smart Grid called Demand Response (DR). DR is where the action is in the Smart Grid. Implementation of DR is made possible by the merger of the following two forces.

The State of Maryland has set the goal of reducing average electricity consumption by 15% and reducing the peak-to-average consumption by 15%. These two requirements will reduce the peak capacity needs by 30%. The goal is to reach these goals by 2015. This makes DR more valuable than all other renewable energy sources combined for the next five years.

Smart Meters are already available in many businesses and they are soon going to be installed in 1.5 million homes in BGE and PEPCO customer residences. These meters will provide two-way communication and data readings from our homes as frequently as every 15 minutes. This provides tremendous opportunities for changes in the way we consume electricity.

These forces will rapidly transform the electric utility industry. DR will make the cost of electricity become a function of supply and demand which will make electricity be like other commodities where the market determines the price. If you are well-informed, you may save money. And, if you are real well-informed, you may be able to see some of the many new business opportunities that are being created by DR.

Bjorn Frogner has a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from University of California at Berkeley. He worked for about 35 years across a broad range of technologies, primarily related to energy and IT, while he lived in Silicon Valley in California. He moved to Annapolis, Maryland, in 2009 and he now works part-time as Entrepreneur-in- Residence at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. His function there is to help startup companies in the clean energy field. He had many years of experience with the electric grid during the 70s and 80s. He has spent significant amount of time during the last 18 months making himself informed about the cyber security for the electric grid.
