David Hoffman is UMBC's Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency.
Forbes' CivicNation Voice blog has published the third in a series of short essays I'm writing with leaders from the American Democracy Project, NASPA, and The Democracy Commitment. The essays are part of a national conversation about refocusing and energizing higher education's civic learning and democratic engagement work.
The first post, Hope and Strategy for a Thriving Democracy, provided an overview of the national conversation. The second post proposed a vision for a thriving democracy that can transcend the challenges of the present day.
This latest post addresses the knowledge, skills, and dispositions people need to create and support a thriving democracy, including real communication and critical solidarity.
