Summer Enrichment Academy Work Opportunities
Wednesday, April 17, 2019 · Noon - 1 PM
Join us this Wednesday to hear from LaMar Davis, Director for the Institute of Extended Learning (IXL) at UMBC, about possible opportunities for UMBC Engineering and other STEM majors to work with middle school students over the summer in a four week half day academic program, that would complement programming already in place at three Howard County Schools. This course could also be replicated to run in the Fall on weekends and after school year round.
LaMar Davis served as Director for The Choice Program at UMBC for 20 year. The program’s Community Service-Learning Leadership Fellowship assisted youth and families involved in the juvenile justice and social service systems. LaMar also served as Acting Director of UMBC’s SUCCESS, a program for students with intellectual disabilities on UMBC campus from 2015 to 2018. He currently serves on the Open Society Institute’s Leadership Council, and the Maryland’s State Advisory Board for Juvenile Services. He holds a BA in Anthropology from University of California, Santa Cruz and a MA in Arts Administration from Goucher College.
In July 2018, LaMar was appointed to serve as Director for the Institute of Extended Learning (IXL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The IXL is dedicated to providing communities with access and pathways to innovative academic experiences through exploration and smart fun. IXL extends UMBC’s reach and expertise to learners of all ages and backgrounds through our Test Prep and Summer Enrichment Academies. The Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) offers middle and high school students a variety of non-credit academic enrichment activities, in disciplines including: science, engineering, technology, arts, and humanities. Participants work alongside UMBC faculty, students, and industry experts allowing them to tap into their creative talents, expand critical thinking, and hone their academic skills. Test Prep Academy (TPA) offers high quality test preparation instruction and strategy workshops for students taking the SAT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT and IELTS tests. Our programs seek to assist students in fulfilling their potential and reaching their goals for getting into the best educational institutions.
