Transitioning into college is not always easy… especially if you are the first in your family to attend, if you are a part of a marginalized community, or if you regularly find yourself with more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we are here to help!
Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) has partnered with the Academic Success Center to bring you three sessions that focus on helping you develop the skills and tools you need to experience first-year success! Sessions will take place virtually on October 19 and 26 and November 2 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Not only will we explore academic success skills and principles, but we will also explore tools for navigating issues of discrimination, bias, and microaggressions within academic spaces, and focus on the many ways our identities are assets within the college environment.
- Session 1 - How to College: Exploring tools for first-year students (THIS EVENT HAS PASSED)
- This session will explore university resources, key skills for first-year transition success, and will connect attendees with upper-class students who will share their own stories and recommendations for first-year success.
- Session 2 - How to College: Knowing What to Expect and How to Navigate Challenges Oct. 26 5-6:30PM
- This session will explore issues of bias, discrimination, and microaggressions - how they show up in university spaces, how to recognize them, and how to lessen their impact. Attendees will leave with tools and skills to help navigate identity-based challenges during their academic transition.
- Session 3 - How to College: Bringing you into the classroom Nov. 2 5-6:30PM
- Have you heard of Cultural Wealth? Do you know that your identities are assets in university spaces? This session will explore the ways students bring Cultural Wealth into the classroom and will introduce attendees to returning students who have learned how to advocate for themselves and be authentic in classroom spaces despite sometimes being the only one who shares their identity.
