Dr. Ganeshan also is PI on the proposal "Evaluating the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) Height derived from GeoOptics GNSS RO Measurements," which was selected for funding (GNSS = Global Navigation Satellite Systems, RO = Radio Occultation). This proposal had been submitted to the NASA ROSES A.43 Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition New Vendor Onramp Evaluation (CNVOE) program. Along with Co-I Joseph Santanello (617/GSFC), she will explore the performance of GeoOptics GNSS measurements in the PBL.
Dr. Ganeshan shared the research goals of this proposal: "This proposal seeks to evaluate the quality of commercial remote sensing measurements, specifically GeoOptics Level 2 refractivity profiles, and to conduct a thorough investigation of its usability for deriving and studying the planetary boundary layer (PBL) height variability in extratropical land, ocean, and polar regions.
The PBL hosts all exchanges between the atmosphere and the surface, thus acting as a conduit between the surface and free atmosphere. Knowledge of the PBL height (PBLH) is critical for understanding weather and climate, water and energy cycles, biogeochemical cycles, aerosol and cloud chemistry, impacts of climate change on ecological systems, among other areas of Earth Science research. Improved PBL measurements from space are a high priority for NASA and the NASA Decadal Survey Incubation program."
