Our Face Tells, story of oppression of Hazara in Afghanistan
Monday, August 15, 2022 · 1 - 2:30 PM
Hosted by the Shriver Center at UMBC, this short documentary premiere event takes place on the 1-year anniversary of the fall of Kabul and the Afghan government in 2021. Zareen Taj (LLC Cohort 22, advocate, author, speaker, and filmmaker) will present her new film with her long-time collaborator Jay Simpson (M.A. Gallatin School of Individualized at New York University, 2021) and host a question and answer period afterward.
'Mirroring the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation framework, this short documentary focuses attention on the oppression of the Hazara ethnicity in Afghanistan and the experiences of dual oppression faced by Hazara women. Interviews with remarkable Hazara women, including the first female mayor of Afghanistan, provide insight into how these women became leaders in their community and continue to fight to transform Afghan society.
At this critical moment, female Hazara leaders are under heightened and specific threat by the Taliban and the international community must act to support them.'
