Title: Adaptative radiation of ammonia-oxidizing archaea, one of the most successful organisms on Earth
Speaker: Dr. Wei Qin
Host: Dr. Feng Chen
Abstract: The discovery of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) has fundamentally changed our view of the global nitrogen cycle. As one of the most ubiquitous and abundant organisms on earth, AOA exert a controlling influence on nitrogen form and availability in both marine and terrestrial environments. They also make a significant contribution to carbon fixation, greenhouse gas production, and vitamin B12 provision in natural systems. During my presentation I will highlight some of the initial insights we have gained into the biology of AOA through the comprehensive comparative physiological, genomic, and metagenomic analyses spanning a broad representation of marine, freshwater, soil, and geothermal AOA species. These findings provide mechanistic understanding of the remarkable adaptive radiation of the AOA into nearly every known ecosystem on Earth.
