Abstract: Data plots have been being used widely for exploratory data analysis, model checking and diagnosis. The question is, if it also helps in the statistical decision making process. In this talk we will present how statistical graphics or data plots can be used in inferential procedures. We call this method visual statistical inference. The experimental results suggest that this visual method performs at least as good as the conventional hypothesis tests such as T or F tests. Surprisingly, visual tests have higher power than the conventional UMP tests when the effect size is large. These interesting findings open up new areas of research and expand the use of graphics bridging the long existing gulf between exploratory and inferential statistics.
