Film: Munyurangabo (Rwanda, Lee Isaac Chung, 2009)
In Kinyarwanda with English subtitles
Part of the 2017-18 Espaces series on Central Africa, sponsored by the French Area of MLLI.
In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, two boys, one from each of the opposing sides in the chaos, set out on a quest for revenge. They are told “Hutus and Tutsis should not be friends.” Called “a quiet film about a still-traumatized Rwanda” by the New York Times, this work won the Grand Prize at the 2007 AFI Fest and was the first feature film ever made in the Kinyarwanda language.
