The office of Off-Campus Student Services celebrated with UMBC’s commuter students at the annual Commuter Week—a week of events to highlight, entertain, and inform the commuter student population. Beginning on October 28th and ending on November 1st, each day was filled with ways to engage with the campus community from “Commuter Game Night” to “Good Morning Commuters Breakfast” to “Commuters Care: Vets Service Project”.
Students got lots of tips about being safe on and off campus and while on the road. At “Street Smarts: Self-Defense and Safety”, the UMBC police demonstrated self-defense moves, and UHS peer health educators advised students on how to defend themselves during the upcoming cold and flu season. “Green Dot Overview” provided guidance for keeping the campus community safe through active bystander training. As the week moved into Halloween, commuters learned about emergency car maintenance such as changing a flat tire, checking tire pressure, and jump-starting a car at “Nightmare on Hilltop”.
Other Halloween-themed events included “Transportation Fair” with a zombie twist and “Carpool Fever” with a scary movie flair. At these events, students learned about commuting options available at UMBC such as Transit Services’ seven shuttle lines, connections to MTA’s public transportation system, and the growing casual carpooling community. and ending on November 1st
Although Commuter Week 2013 has come to an end, OCSS continues to host events every week. Keep up-to-date on ways to get involved at the UMBC Off-Campus Student Services facebook page or at http://my.umbc.edu/groups/ocss.
