Course Description:
The Arab-Israeli conflict is one of the longest lasting conflicts in world history. As such it has impacted not only the people of the Middle East but also people all over the world. Since the end of the Cold War many have argued that the Arab-Israeli conflict is one of the root causes of the on-going crisis between the West and the Islamic world, a clash of global dimensions. This course traces the history of the conflict from its beginning during the Ottoman Empire through its many cycles of war as well as the many continuing attempts at resolution. This course examines the relations between Israelis and Palestinians, Arabs and Israelis, and among the Arab states. It looks at the connection between domestic and international factors and the effect both have on regional interactions. To shed light and increase the understanding of the many aspects of the conflict, the course uses theoretical insights on war and peace from international relations theories with primary focus on deterrence theory.
