The Shriver Center's Community Engaged Learning Team is seeking a few more students to enroll in the 096 Community Engaged Learning Practicum.
In this Practicum, students engage in weekly service and reflection through the enrollment of a zero-credit, pass/fail course.
Reflective assignments teach students about systemic inequality, power, & privilege.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain leadership skills through impactful community engagement!
A few spots are still open to to support these partners:
- Best Buddies, Thursdays 5:30-7:30 pm: UMBC female students to form one-on-one friendships to enhance the lives of women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Activities include Bingo, Arts and Crafts, and Jewelry Making.

Arbutus Achievers at Arbutus Middle School, Tutoring Tuesday and Thursday 2:40-4:30 pm either day (both is fine, too!): Tutor middle school students to prepare for high school and college readiness and create and lead activities that encourage leadership development.

Creative Coders at Arbutus Middle School, 2:40-4:30 pm Thursdays: UMBC Students will be paired with 4, 5, 6 graders in Computer Science at Arbutus Middle School. The Creative Coders Program teaches students the basics of computer science through game programming in Scratch and with Robotics Kits. Robotics Competition and VEX Training included.
- Retriever Essentials at UMBC: Meal Recovery, 2:15-4:00 pm, Mon-Fri (pick one day, more if you’re free): The goal of Retriever Essentials is to combat food insecurity at UMBC through providing access to free groceries, toiletries, and resources. As a volunteer, you will be supporting pantry operations, pantry maintenance, food distribution to different places across campus. You also may be asked to help with tabling events, social media, or photography for Retriever Essentials.
