For Faculty: Building Community Online from Day One
Wednesday, July 8th, 2020 | Noon - 1:00 p.m. | Online
Key to students’ motivation and learning is a feeling of connectedness to the class--to the instructor, to other students, and to content. Such feelings foster engagement--an essential element for students to succeed. For many of us creating that sense of community seems easier when we can meet with our students face-to-face. How can we establish connections online? Join with colleagues for a virtual discussion about ways to structure student interactions, demonstrate and manage your presence in the class, teach for inclusion, and convey caring and support in your online course.

Tip of the Week
Events not showing up on the main UMBC Together page?
Even if the myUMBC group page you manage is public, events will not appear on the main page unless you click it to be visible on the University Calendar. To check whether an event is visible, go to the event post, click “edit” located on the right side of the page. Under the Events Calendar section, click on “Show in this group AND on the university calendar.” You will be given the opportunity to select up to three categories for which your event should be categorized as. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Post Event” to save the changes. Your event should show up momentarily on the UMBC Together page.
