Hello Sociology Majors!
I'm writing with a brief curriculum update. Every 7 years, all programs receive external feedback about their curriculum with recommendations. Our external reviewers suggested that we change our SOCY 300 course from 4 credits to 3 credits. The logic behind this was that the statistics and lab portion are comprehensively covered in SOCY 301 (4 credits) and may no longer be necessary in SOCY 300. We reviewed the curriculum and agreed. So, starting in Fall 2024 your SOCY 300 (methods) course is only 3 credits and will no longer involve a statistics lab. SOCY 301 (statistics) will remain 4 credits and still include a statistics lab for that additional 1 credit. We will update the website today also to reflect this change.
This should have no major implications for anyone because it is only 1 credit change to the major, but students who are close to graduation should keep an eye on your "total" credits needed and upper level credits needed with your advisors just in case to make sure you're not short credits. If you find that you are, contact your advisor or me (Dr. Mair christine_mair@umbc.edu).
Wishing you best wishes as you finish up your spring semester!
