Volunteer for 'I Love STEM Day'
Leidos (formerly Lockheed Martin IS&GS) is working closely with Featherbed Lane Elementaryto plan a 'I Love STEM Day' event. The event is scheduled for Friday, June 2, 2017.
Featherbed Lane Elementary is located at 6700 Richardson Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21207. There are approximately 630 students in grades K-5 that attend the school.
We would like to have a few IT and engineering students (7-10 or more) from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) to share some of their experiences with students through interactive demonstrations (via their own classroom work, projects, experiences, etc.) at one of the 2 STEM stations that will be available to students during the day. In addition, we would like to have UMBC engineering and IT students assist with conducting several classroom activities during the day which will be focused on Hour of Code activities (https://hourofcode.com/us). Classroom activities with last for ~45 minutes to an hour. The event is almost a full day starting at 8 am with assemblies and STEM stations and concluding with the classroom visits which are usually done by 3 pm.
Highlights of past year’s I Love STEM Day events included the participation of 30 volunteers from Lockheed Martin/Leidos, Morgan State University (MSU) engineering students, and UMBC engineering students that engaged with students during display station and classroom visits. Activities on display at the Lockheed Martin/Leidos stations included a wind tunnel, hovercraft demonstrations, architectural models, and other science-related discussions. Classroom-based activities spanned K-5 and included such engineering challenges as creating a potato battery, building a tall structure using a deck of cards, building a paper chair, building a hovercraft, and building a bridge.
UMBC participants from past years included: Peter Asad, Peter Luu, Samuel Samuel, Christianna Sasser, and Stefan Wroblewski.
Please feel free to contact me directly regarding this volunteer opportunity if you have any additional questions.
