Title: Administrative Assistant II, Academic Partnerships and High-Impact Experiences
Years in Student Affairs/at UMBC: 3 months
What is something you do as part of your position that people may not be aware of?
As a member of the Academic Partnerships and High Impact Experiences (APHIE) team led by Dr. James DeVita, I provide administrative support to both the Center for Democracy and Civic Life and Student Affairs Success Initiatives. I'm extremely grateful to Maisha Cron, Donna Poleski, Gina Hoagland, Shakira Davidson, and the staff in SABSC, ECS, and SACM for their patient and thoughtful guidance and support as I continue to learn administrative, procurement, event scheduling, travel, communications, and inventory systems.
What is one of the most important things you’ve learned during your time here?
I learned my first week at UMBC, and continue to be reminded on a daily basis, that the mission of the Division of Student Affairs to foster a supportive, inclusive, and engaged campus community is not just words, but is truly alive. I am especially impressed by how kind, thoughtful, and sincere the administration, staff, students, and faculty are. I am truly inspired by the students I’ve had the opportunity to interact with, and I appreciate the excellent job they do juggling myriad responsibilities in The Commons third floor offices, including the Student Affairs front desk, Events and Conference Services, Vice President of Student Affairs suite, commonvision, and Student Affairs Business Services Center.
What do you like to do for fun and/or is something you are passionate about outside of work?
I really enjoy going to art museums, but I especially like to go to exhibitions and events at nonprofit art spaces and galleries. I've always loved art and design, and I was an art major in college and completed a graduate program in graphic design. But when I worked as a gallery director in a nonprofit arts center, I got to know many artists across the Mid-Atlantic region. Going to exhibits helps me keep up with artists I know, seeing the progression of their studio practices and supporting their work, but I also enjoy discovering emerging artists and artists whose work I’ve never seen before.
