The air in the room is cold.
You walk in to see an abundance of officers scurrying around. Photographers take pictures of the crime scene; flashes of light scatter your field of vision. In the center of all the movement is the detective, who stands still and unphased by the disorganized nature of the crime scene.
You open your mouth to ask a question, but the detective is already talking.
"The motive is right in front of us," she says, hands in the pockets of her trenchcoat.
Your face shows a look of confusion--you're puzzled--you think to yourself: How? How can this be so clear?
"Everything we need is here," the detective continues, "The red stain on the carpet, the broken glass, the human-shaped hole going through the wall leading outside..." She takes her right hand out of her pocket. 1977 silver dollar. She slides her thumb under the coin, flips it with a ting.
"Whoever was here was rushing to get to the Cartoonist Club."
The coin, in middair, begins to fall.
"They knew that the club was meeting today from 1-5pm in ILSB 302. Where drawing hijinks would ensue."
The coin decends further.
"The red stain and glass on the carpet was from the cranberry juice they were having for breakfast. When they realized that the club started soon, they got so excited they immediately smashed the glass of the red beverage on the floor and made a break for the nearest wall."
She catches the coin, snatching it from the grasp of gravity and puts it back in the right pocket of her coat. She smiles.
"Case closed."
