Dear Campus Community,
As we mark the start of a new academic year, I want to take time to remind our community that UMBC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff and takes seriously its responsibility to maintain a campus environment which is free from discrimination and harassment.
In accordance with UMBC’s Discrimination and Equal Opportunity Policy, the university does not discriminate in offering equal access to its educational programs and activities or with respect to employment terms and conditions on the basis of a UMBC community member’s race, creed, color, religion, sex, gender, pregnancy, ancestry, age, gender identity or expression, national origin, veterans status, marital status, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or genetic information.
UMBC’s Policy on Sex Discrimination, Sex-Based Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct further prohibits discrimination and harassment on the basis of sex, which includes but is not limited to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.
Inquiries about Title IX should be referred to UMBC’s interim Title IX coordinator and/or to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights:
- Leah Reynolds, Interim Title IX Coordinator, Office of Equity and Civil Rights; Administration Building, 9th Floor; 410-455-1717; ecr@umbc.edu
- U.S. Department of Education, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Civil Rights; 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C., 20202; 1-800-421-3481
With the exception of staff designated as confidential resources, all UMBC faculty (including adjunct faculty) and staff (including student employees) are required to inform the Title IX coordinator of incidents of sex discrimination of which they become aware.
To report information about conduct that may constitute discrimination or harassment or to file a complaint, please contact the Office of Equity and Civil Rights (ECR) by email at ecr@umbc.edu, by calling 410-455-1717, or by completing an online reporting form.
Please look for additional information throughout the academic year from ECR and the Division of Institutional Equity as we continue to work together toward a more equitable and inclusive campus for all students, faculty, and staff.
Sincerely,
Tanyka M. Barber
Vice President for Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer
