David Hoffman is UMBC's Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency.
Along with UMBC colleagues, I’ll be leading a session about one component of this vision—the Pyramid Model for Deepening Democracy described in the video starting at 13:10—at the 2017 ADP/TDC/NASPA Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement meeting in Baltimore. I hope to see you there!
During the run up to the 2016 election last June, I had the opportunity to give a talk at the opening plenary session of the ADP/TDC/NASPA Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement meeting in Indianapolis. The participants were higher education administrators, faculty, staff, students and community partners dedicated to strengthening American democracy. Then as now, the news was full of reasons for concern about the prospects for our success.
In my talk, I chose to look forward to a more hopeful future by addressing my remarks to the 2046 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement meeting and looking back at the road we had traveled in the 30 years between 2016 and 2046.

Nine months into the future I was describing, how well do you think my vision is holding up? Where do we go from here?
