Brass Bash
Concert Hall, Performing Arts and Humanities Building
UMBC brass faculty and students come together for an epic night of brass in the second ever UMBC Brass Bash. The evening will include brass chamber music, full brass and percussion ensemble, and performances by special guest Øystein Baadsvik (pictured), the only tuba player in the world who works exclusively as a soloist. The UMBC Faculty Brass Quintet features Wayne Cameron (trumpet), Justin Drew (horn), Patrick Crossland (trombone), and Brian Kaufman (tuba).
About Guest Soloist Øystein Baadsvik
Øystein Baadsvik is the only tuba player to have carved out a career exclusively as a soloist, rather than becoming a member of an orchestra or accepting a teaching post. His multi-faceted musical career as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist has taken him all over the world. The unique virtuosity and musicality Baadsvik brings to the tuba has established him as the exemplar of the instrument. Composer John Williams noted that Baadsvik’s “rendering of my concerto far surpasses anything a composer might hope for.”
Baadsvik’s international career began in 1991, when he was awarded two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d’Exécution Musicale in Geneva, and he debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2006. His international engagements include performances with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic, L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Musica Vitae (Swedish Chamber Orchestra), the Taipei National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, the Orchestra Victoria of Melbourne, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Wratislavia Chamber Orchestra, the Gdansk Philharmonic, the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Sweden’s Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and the Singapore Philharmonic. He appears regularly at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass. The Festival’s Honorary Patron, the world-renowned horn player, Barry Tuckwell, remarked: “Øystein Baadsvik, a great musician and a great performer, is the most remarkable tuba player I have ever heard.”
Baadsvik’s development of new tuba-playing techniques have been used in a number of more recent works for the instrument. He has premiered some 40 solo works by composers from the USA, Russia, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. He has added to the tuba literature with his own compositions and conducts many of his own orchestral concerts. He is also an active recording artist with releases on the BIS label.
