Vega: Digital Publishing Platform for Scholarship
Thursday, March 12, 2015 · 12:30 - 2:30 PM
Join us on Thursday, March 12, 2015, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, Room 216, for "Vega: Digital Publishing Platform for Scholarship" with Dr. Cheryl E. Ball of West Virginia University.
This presentation will highlight a new publishing project in the works: Vega, an academic publishing platform supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Building on fifteen years as editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy, Dr. Ball will discuss how publishing multimedia scholarship requires different kinds of infrastructure than scholars, editors, and publishers are used to with print-based publishing. Vega incorporates newer publishing processes, such as collaborative authoring, open peer review, and design editing, as well as newer products, such as media-rich articles and data sets.
Ball will talk about the opportunities and challenges of composing, editing, publishing, and evaluating scholarship in the 21st century, primarily when it takes nontraditional, digital forms.
Cheryl E. Ball is Associate Professor of Digital Publishing Studies at West Virginia University and editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy. She teaches classes in editing, multimedia authoring, and digital publishing and teaches occasional seminars on academic literacies at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.
This event and working group are sponsored by the James T. and Virginia M. Dresher Center for the Humanities. It is also co-sponsored by the Language, Literacy and Culture Doctoral Program and the following departments: English, Faculty Development Center, Ancient Studies, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.
