Earlier this year, Professor Janice Jackson and students from the Jubilee Singers attended the play The Gift of Marian Anderson about American contralto Marian Anderson, presented by the Carter Braxton Chapter Players of the Carter Braxton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Ms. Anderson
was denied access to perform in DAR’s Constitution
Hall in March 1939 because of her race. At the
request of President Roosevelt, her concert at the
Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday before an
integrated audience of 75,000 was considered the
first civil rights rally in America.
