“Insights from a Probabilistic Survey of Small Headwater Streams in Ohio”
Abstract
A probabilistic survey of small headwaters was conducted in 2023. The sampling frame included all streams with a drainage area between 1.0 and 3.1 mi2, representing 13,411 stream miles, or 14.5% of the total stream miles in the state. Despite representing a comparatively large fraction of total stream miles, these streams have been under sampled relative to larger streams. Streams within the range of 3.1 to 50 mi2 drainage area represent a similar fraction of the total stream miles in the state but have received roughly six times as much sampling effort. The effort on larger streams is a function of the need to have information to help manage discharge permits. However, given that pollution from diffuse sources is the leading cause of water quality impairment to waters of the state, information from small streams is similarly needed to help manage those sources. By arraying survey results across a range of stressor gradients, inferences can be made with respect to factors that either mitigate or exacerbate observed biological condition, thus informing possible management strategies for restoration and protection.
