CUERE Seminar: Dr. Jeffrey Halverson
Abstract
On the evening of July 30, 2016, historical Ellicott City, MD was inundated by a deadly and highly destructive flash flood. This talk examines the rainfall distribution and meteorology behind the event. Just a few weeks later, on September 28-29, a second flash flood unfolded across southern Maryland, producing 8”-10” rain totals. Both of these events were convective in nature and shared common synoptic-scale attributes. In both cases, meteorologists broadly recognized a regional flash flood threat, but were unable to a priori localize the regions receiving greatest rain totals. The talk concludes with a discussion of these ongoing predictive challenges.
