Fifteen CBEE students attended the 2024 AIChE Annual Student Conference in San Diego, CA from October 25, 2024 to October 28, 2024.
The students presented research and / or completed in chemical engineering related events.
AIChE's student chapter and the ChemE Jeopardy, K-12 Outreach Competition and ChemE Car teams are student led and student organized. CBEE faculty mentors, Drs. Neha Raikar and Mariajosé Castellanos advise and coach the groups thoughout the year.
We want to recognize the participation and success of our student at the national conference!
ChemE Jeopardy - 3rd place, National Competition
Our team reached the finals, marking our presence in the finals every year since 2020. We finished in third place in an exceptionally close competition where only a small margin separated the top teams.

K-12 Outreach Competition
Top 9 -12 module for the "Chilly Chameleon Heat Exchanger"
Our team won the top judges' award in the high-school category, marking the second consecutive year we have secured an award in this competition since we began participating.

ChemE Car Competition
UMBC placed 26 of 51 cars for a target distance of 26.62 m.
UMBC's car successfully ran in both attempts, competing strongly in a challenging field. The winning car from Cornell University stopped only 12.4 cm from the target.

AIChE Best Student Chapter Award
UMBC's AIChE Student Chapter received one of the Best Student Chapter Awards for the second consecutive year.

Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Award
Pavan Umashankar was recognized as one of the recipients of this distinguished award. A special acknowledgment to Dr. Mariajosé Castellanos for coordinating the nomination process. Coincidentally, Dr. Castellanos had received the same award as an undergraduate student.
