Special Topics in Healthcare: A Case Study Approach (INDS430-02 [6835]), presented by the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, will be taught by Dr. Fizza Gulamali-Majid, Division Chief of Newborn and Childhood Screening, Maryland State Laboratories Administration.
This small, seminar-style course (~20 students) will use case-studies to explore the challenges of delivering healthcare in the 21st century, including a background to the disparities found within the United States. Specific topics include population screening for disease and current health crises (such as Ebola and dementia). As context, the class will include an introduction to global health, including the influences of culture, religion and resources on decision-making by major health organizations. Students will be encouraged to propose potential plans and solutions for practicing professionals who face real-world healthcare issues that integrate economic, technical, political, ethical and personal challenges.
Departmental Consent is required. Preference will be given to students who have completed BIOL302 (Molecular & General Genetics) and any coursework in Psychology, Sociology, or Global Studies. To request permission, email freeland@umbc.edu.
