Professor Houbing Herbert Song elected to European Academy of Engineering

Houbing Herbert Song, professor of information systems at UMBC, has been elected as a member of the European Academy of Engineering (EAE) in 2026 within the Computer Science and Information Technology class.

Election to the European Academy of Engineering recognizes exceptional engineers and scholars who have made outstanding, lasting contributions to engineering science and technology globally. New members are nominated by existing members and selected through a process of peer review and expert committee evaluation. 

At UMBC, Song serves as the director of the Security and Optimization for Networked Globe (SONG) Laboratory. His research focuses on neurosymbolic AI, trustworthy AI, anomaly detection, and the combination of artificial intelligence and the “internet of things.” His work aims to improve the safety, security, and trustworthiness of interconnected digital and physical infrastructures, including applications in autonomous systems, manufacturing, aviation, and intelligent transportation systems. Song has published extensively and holds leadership roles across several international engineering organizations. An IEEE fellow and ACM distinguished member, he serves as co-editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics and founding chair of the ACM Emerging Interest Group on Trustworthy and Responsible Systems.
