COEIT faculty members named to endowed professorships and chairs
The College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) announces the latest appointments and renewals for endowed professorships and chairs. These honors recognize the exceptional scholarship, leadership, and contributions of faculty to the university and their respective fields.
We are pleased to celebrate the following faculty members:

Anupam Joshi, vice provost and chief AI officer at UMBC and professor of computer science and electrical engineering, has been re-appointed as the Oros Family Professor in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The Oros Family Chair was endowed to “honor and support the work of faculty pursuing scholarly activity in the Department of Computer Science,” particularly in mobile and wireless computing, security, privacy and artificial intelligence.
An accomplished researcher in cybersecurity, AI, and data science, Joshi is recognized as a fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He serves as director of the UMBC Cybersecurity Institute and has previously served as the department chair for computer science and electrical engineering and acting dean of COEIT. He was also a recipient of the 2023 University System of Maryland Board of Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship or Research. As a 2022-2023 American Council on Education fellow, he gained additional leadership experience while shadowing University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay A. Perman and University of Maryland, Baltimore President Bruce Jarrell.

Tülay Adali, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, has been appointed as the Willard and Lillian Hackerman Chair in Engineering. This position was endowed to “honor and support the work of faculty pursuing scholarly activity in the college.” Adali was selected in recognition of her excellent research, mentoring, and service over more than 30 years at UMBC.
Adali is an interdisciplinary, internationally recognized scholar highly cited for her interdisciplinary work in statistical signal processing and machine learning, specifically for her work in biomedical data analysis. She has successfully guided more than 30 doctoral students who have gone on to successful careers in academia, research laboratories, and industry. She is a fellow of both IEEE and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and was a recipient of the 2024 Presidential Research Professor Award.

Jeanne van Briesen, dean of COEIT, has been appointed as the Constellation Professor in Information Technology and Engineering. Endowed by the Constellation Energy Group and traditionally held by the COEIT dean, the professorship in part supports special initiatives in the college.
All awardees are appointed by the president or provost, based on the recommendation of the COEIT dean for the proposed term of service, which is typically five years.
