IMPACT Workshop
COEIT Students: Learn About Research and Grad School
Friday, November 30, 2018 · 12 - 12:50 PM
Presenter: Dr. Peng Xu, Assistant Professor, Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering at UMBC
Topic: METABOLIC ENGINEERING AND SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY: ENABLING TECHNOLOGY FOR ADVANCED BIOMANUFACTURING
This workshop will introduce students the concepts of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology for various applications. Detailed examples will include the history and major breakthrough of industrial biotechnology, engineering yeast to produce anti-malarial drugs and reprogram bacteria to sense small molecules for diagnosis applications. A major part is how to rewrite the genetic software and assemble functional biosynthetic gene clusters in bacteria and yeast.
