CWIT Listening Circle: What's Your Story?
Get to Know Others in the CWIT Community!
Wednesday, September 29, 2021 · 12 - 12:50 PM
CWIT Listening Circles are a new initiative for the 2021-2022 school year. Lunch will be provided.
Our first circle will offer an opportunity to get to know other members of the CWIT community through storytelling. Each participant will be given a few minutes (exact time depends on number of participants) to answer the question, "What's Your Story?"
This prompt is intentionally broad and allows each participant to interpret it for themselves. You may give a brief version of your "life story" (where you grew up, who are your family and friends, how did you end up at UMBC, etc.), or maybe you'll tell just one favorite story of a trip you took, a memory you have, your best friend or a close family member...whatever you want to share to help the other participants get to know you better.
You will also have the opportunity to hear everyone else's stories and get to know them better!
For a bit of context about listening circles, according to the International Institute for Restorative Practices:
"With roots in indigenous cultures around the world, listening circles provide people an opportunity to speak and listen to each other in an atmosphere of safety, decorum and equality.
Listening circles emphasize storytelling for cultivating empathy. To help people gain a shared sense of understanding and emotional connection, these circles can be used in communities, workplaces, schools, organizations, neighborhoods, universities and families."
