Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP and will no longer be releasing security updates as of April 1, 2014. Audit regulations require that all machines used for administrative or academic use be under active security maintenance by the vendor. As a result, after that date we cannot support machines running Windows XP. on campus. The lone exception will be XP machines used to control instruments. In those cases, we can work with departments to find a solution or to place the XP machine on a secure network that is not accessible from outside the campus.
On a first come basis, we will work to support departments that have existing XP machines in use today. In particular, we will prioritize upgrades for any faculty member using an XP machine to have it upgraded to a newer (2-3 year old Windows 7 machine) we have from upgrading our computer labs. For staff or student use, we will work with departments on what is the most effective replacement strategy.
