UMBC Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) &
Engineering and Computing Education Program
December 3, 2025 | 12:00-1:00pm | University Center 310 | UMBC Main Campus
The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar rounds out the fall semester in December with a presentation by Dr. Jamie Gurganus, Director of the UMBC Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) and faculty member of the Engineering and Computing Education Program. Dr.
Jamie Gurganus will share insights from her research on cultivating
empathy as a core global engineering competency. She will highlight how
experiential, cross-cultural, and entrepreneurial learning
environments—combined with positive failure culture, gamification and
emerging universal competencies—shape the development of the empathic
engineer needed today. Her work demonstrates how these approaches foster
innovation grounded in social awareness, inclusivity, and human impact.
All members of the
department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments and institutions are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department. Please RSVP by completing this form as soon as possible:
