Summary
In this talk, I give a brief overview of what Open Educational Practices are and how Open Educational Resources (OER) support teachers looking to augment their curriculum with high-quality digital materials. OER give teachers permission to localize materials to students’ needs and interests and can elevate diversity and inclusion that is often missing from textbooks or curricula. I’ll showcase several examples of OER, including the Pathways Project which is an OER K-16 community that I co-direct and provides over 900 customizable language activities online for free. Together, we’ll identify best practices integrated into two Pathways Project activities. Finally, I’ll provide a handout with links to my favorite OER repositories so you can integrate these into your (future) ESOL/EFL classroom.
Dr. Kelly Arispe is an Associate Professor at Boise State University where she teaches upper-division Spanish Linguistics courses and Teacher Education courses in methods, literacy, and assessment for pre-service language teachers. Her primary research focuses on L2 OER-enabled pedagogy (OEP) and Computer and Mobile Assisted Language Learning. She is co-director of the Pathways Project, an OER repository that hosts over 800 ancillary materials that foster interpersonal speaking and intercultural competence.
