UMBC is currently undertaking multiple utility improvements on campus. In order to upgrade the electrical equipment serving buildings in the academic core, the walkway between Sherman and Sondheim Halls will be partially closed during the day on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021. This will allow for the installation of equipment near Sondheim Hall. Additionally, the southeast Sherman entrance (facing Sondheim) and the southwest Sondheim entrance (facing Sherman) will be emergency egress only on that day. Signs will direct pedestrians around the closures via accessible routes. All teaching and office spaces in adjacent buildings will remain accessible during this time. The walkway between Sherman and Sondheim Halls will reopen to pedestrians on Tuesday evening. Please see the attached diagram depicting the extents of the closure and available pedestrian routes.
The southwest Sondheim entrance will be open to pedestrians but will not be a fully accessible route through Sunday, November 14th, 2021. Signs will direct pedestrians to an accessible entrance at the north side of the building. A temporary electric generator will remain in place during this time to provide power to adjacent buildings. It will not impact accessible pedestrian routes.
Lastly, the Sondheim and Administration buildings will experience planned electrical outages during the following times:
1. Sunday October 31st, 2021, 6 AM – 2 PM
2. Sunday November 7th, 2021, 6 AM – 10 AM
3. Sunday November 14th, 2021, 6 AM – 2 PM
The buildings, except for emergency equipment, will be without power during the above times.
Accessibility is part of the design process, and we work in partnership with Accessibility and Disability Services which supports faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities. If you have a concern about accessibility or want to inquire about a disability-based accommodation, please do so through their website.
Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain and enhance the UMBC campus.
